As part of the CSSR outreach in 2024, the Deputy Special Envoy Najat Rochdi held two group meetings on 10 and 11 October with Syrian civil society organizations based in Germany. The meetings focused on the situation on the ground, in particular the influx of Syrians and Lebanese crossing to Syria seeking refuge following the Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon. Participants also focused on the governance aspects in the different areas of control and whether decentralization could be an entry point to the political process. In the second group meetings, the discussion focused on the multiple challenges in the education sector in Syria, including regarding the multiple curricula, the recognition of diplomas, the lack of qualified personnel, and inadequate school facilities. Participants noted that education was increasingly being used to reinforce political and territorial divisions. DSE Rochdi urged participants to propose confidence-building measures within the education sector as a means to promote peace and unity, empowering young generations to heal and rebuild their nation.
